Family-Based Immigration

Family-based immigration is a vital part of the U.S. immigration system, enabling U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents (LPRs) to sponsor family members.

Immediate Relatives of U.S. Citizens

These categories have no annual limits, making the process quicker:

  1. Spouses of U.S. Citizens: U.S. citizens can sponsor their foreign spouses for a green card.
  2. Unmarried Children Under 21: U.S. citizens can sponsor their unmarried children under the age of 21.
  3. Parents of U.S. Citizens: U.S. citizens aged 21 or older can sponsor their parents.

Family Preference Categories

These categories are subject to annual limits, resulting in longer waits:

  1. F1 • Unmarried sons and Daughters (21 or older) of U.S. Citizens
  2. F2A • Spouses and Children (under 21) of Permanent Residents
  3. F2B • Unmarried Sons and Daughters (21 or older) of Permanent Residents
  4. F3 • Married Sons and Daughters (any age) of U.S. Citizens
  5. F4 • Siblings of Adult U.S. Citizens
