Family-Based Immigration to Canada

Canada offers several pathways for family-based immigration, allowing Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their family members to join them in the country.

The main categories of family sponsorship include:

  1. Spouse, Common-Law Partner, or Conjugal Partner Sponsorship: Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor their spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner to become a permanent resident of Canada. This applies whether the partner is living in Canada or abroad, as long as they meet eligibility requirements, including proof of a genuine relationship.
  2. Dependent Children: Parents can sponsor their biological or adopted children under the age of 22, provided the children are unmarried and meet other eligibility criteria. In some cases, children over 22 may be sponsored if they are financially dependent on their parents due to physical or mental conditions.
  3. Parents and Grandparents: Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor their parents or grandparents through the Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship Program (PGP). This program requires proof of financial support and a commitment to financially support the family members for a specified period after their arrival in Canada.
  4. Other Relatives: In exceptional cases, Canadian citizens or permanent residents may sponsor other relatives, such as orphaned siblings, nieces, or nephews, provided there are no other qualifying family members in Canada.

Canada’s family sponsorship process typically involves submitting an application that includes evidence of the relationship, proof of financial stability, and compliance with immigration regulations. The sponsored family members must also pass medical and background checks as part of the application process.
